Dr. James Roth received his DVM in 1975 and worked as a practicing veterinarian for two years before returning to Iowa State University as a graduate student and adjunct instructor. He received an MS in 1979 and PhD in 1981. He is a Distinguished Professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine at ISU. He has served as the major or co-major professor for 44 MS and PhD students. Dr. Roth teaches immunology to the veterinary students, and has an active research program. Since 1980, he has authored or co-authored over 150 publications in refereed journals. Dr. Roth has contributed 33 chapters to monographs since 1984, and has edited 12 monographs and one textbook. He served as President of the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists from 2004 to 2008. Dr. Roth received the Distinguished Veterinary Immunologist Award from the American Association of Veterinary Immunologists in 1997. He has received five teaching awards and was named Clarence Hartley Couvalt Distinguished Professor in 1995. Dr. Roth received the American Veterinary Medical Association's (AVMA) 12th International Veterinary Congress Prize in 2001 and the AVMA’s Public Service Award in 2006. Dr. Roth serves on the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (2005-2012).
