Why was the fork invented?

It is theorized that forks were originally used by the Greeks to remove food from boiling pots. Although the fork has been used as a cooking tool since the ancient Greeks, forks came to the table late as eating utensils. Forks weren’t widely used as an eating utensil until Catherine de Medici brought them to France from Italy, and even then it took a few hundred years for people to stop eating with their hands.
