Don Schaffner, PhD, is a distinguished professor and extension specialist in food science at Rutgers University. To get to know Don, we asked him a few questions.

What is one interesting fact about yourself?

I’m left handed.

What three words or phrases best describe you?

Hard-working, fun, helpful.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I listen to podcasts made by computer nerds.

What’s the last good book you read?

Terry Pratchett’s last book: The Shepherds Crown.

What are you currently working on?

Too many things!  Lots of my students are doing quantitative microbial risk assessments for different pathogens in different foods.

If you could have one superpower what would it be?

Invisibility.

What are you most passionate about?

Helping people understand how math and statistics can help them make better food safety decisions.
